Question:
I’m a widow(er) and haven’t worked in some time, at least ten years. I just became disabled and have severe limitations on my ability to stand, sit, lift, and do any kind of repetitive work. Can I possibly get disability benefits?

Answer:
If you haven’t worked, you still might qualify for Social Security widow’s or widower’s disability benefits, but you must be between the ages of 50 and 60 and you must have become disabled within seven years of the death of your spouse. If your earnings do not exceed a certain amount, you may also qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), no matter your age, work history, or the nature of your disability. Take note: You can’t apply for widow’s or widower’s benefits online; instead you should fill out an Adult Disability Report and file a disability claim with your local Social Security office.
